Textures

Since the material of my chair is an important part of its design I decided to create some textures in Adobe Photoshop that would eventually be applied to a 3D model.

To achieve the look I layered the wood textures up with a Carbon Fibre material in the middle, I then used the eraser tool to remove layers from each wood layer to achieve a worn look.

I started looking for textures of wood and carbon fibre for the seat and back.

For the legs of the chair I wanted to use the shape of the handle of a wrench.

I began developing my design further

One good point that came from developing my design is the shape of the legs, my initial design incorporates a flat peace of steel that bends through slits cut into the seat, the metal then bends around the chair clamping the seat into position.

My initial plan was to laminate damaged material like rusted metal between plastic, and then laminate that into wood to create a laminated back and seat. Then I planned to have the lap layers of veneer sanded away until you can just see the rusted metal within the seat and back.

Realistically I don't believe this method of construction would be very difficult to Achieve, and would be near impossible to do if the chair was to be mass produced. Another method that would achieve a similar result is to laminate carbon fibre between the wooden veneers and then sand the wood down.

I started researching other products that laminate Carbon Fibre with wood veneer.

I decided to use the material of my chair to give the impression of a distressed and damaged look, I began sketching chairs that incorporate different materials into the back and seat.

I began sketching a basic shape for a chair based on the research material I had gathered.

 Although I found some interesting shapes based on my research I decided to explore different shape, form and material.

After picking a look to explore i began looking futher at distorted plastic and draped cloth and i believe they can create some interesting shapes.

From the images I found two really stood out to me, the first one is the blue molten elongated plastic, I like this image because its is more dramatic and stand out from the rest. The second image i like is the one of the partially molten horse, the reason i like this image is the object still retains some of its original structure.
